OUR CZECH SCHOOL Our school is for bilingual children, who speak Czech and English. The school has currently one class of about eleven children between 5-7 years of age. We meet once a week on Saturdays from 11:15 till 14:00 in St. David's Church Hall on Lough Road. We have two fully qualified Czech teachers as well as assistants who provide support with specific activities. We mostly work with textbooks from Nová škola publishing house ( http://nns.cz/blog/ ) and follow the Framework Educational Programme (RVP) for Elementary Education. All textbooks are provided through the school. What is the Czech school really about? Most of our children are from bilingual families with one parent being a native speaker of Czech. The children attend their English schools throughout the week and come to us on Saturday to learn, share and have fun together in an environment which is exclusively Czech. We work with textbooks used in Czech classrooms and encourage children to use Czech at all times. The children absorb the language, learn new things, sing, draw and play together. They can use Czech language in a meaningful way outside the home and make it part of their everyday life. Emphasis is put into integrating Czech cultural references such as songs, rhymes, typically Czech holidays and well known games. All this encourages confidence and makes children proud of their Czech heritage. As we have a range of ages in the class, we also tend to have a range of abilities. Some children are learning their first letters while others can read and write with a degree of confidence. We try to strike the right balance between participation in group activities and every child's needs to develop their specific skills. This means that for some activities the children will be working within their ability group while at other times they may be together as a whole class or participate in mixed ability groups. The School aims to: . Improve fluency and confidence . Teach children reading and writing and develop their speaking and listening skills . Familiarise children with the wider use of the Czech language . Support parents in preparation for examinations required by Czech law (rozdilove zkousky) . Make children more aware of Czech culture and customs . Annual excursion with Czech cultural focus All children should be in class by 11.10 to allow for a timely start to our lessons. We have a short break roughly half way through the lessons where children can let out steam in a garden outside and eat a packed lunch provided by parents. Any textbooks, pencil cases, exercise books, etc. need to be signed. Language level required: Regrettably, at the moment we are unable to accept children whose Czech falls considerably below an expected standard for their age group. To benefit from our schooling, children need to understand Czech and speak/respond adequately for their age. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOWNLOADS Programme for January and February 2010 (CZ/EN) Vzdelavaci program pro Ceske skoly bez hranic Vstupni list zaka Domaci ukol 1 Podzimni basnicky Uvolnovaci cvik pismeno A - 1, pismeno A -2, pismeno A - 3 Shrnuti domacich ukolu |
